Networking Products SMSC introduced its first ARCNET LAN protocol device, the COM9026, in the early 1980s, and has made a name for itself in the ARCNET arena ever since. It has incorporated its ARCNET technology into a family of products presenting a full range of performance and price points appropriate for success in embedded networks. The majority of them have been designed and tested to an industrial operating range of (40(C to +85(C in order to operate in a variety of embedded applications. See the product selector guide below for an overview of SMSC's ARCNET Embedded Networking Products. The low-cost COM20019 is designed to operate at data rates of 156 to 312 Kbps. This transfer rate is optimized for industrial control and building automation applications where the lower transfer speeds can also accommodate extended cabling distances. The COM20020, the mid-line device, supports 156 Kbps to 5.0 mbps data rates and is ideal for industrial control applications. The COM20019 and COM20020 are available in 24 pin DIP, 28 pin PLCC and 48 pin TQFP packages. The COM20020, designed for higher performance, supports a 10 Mbps data rate¾exceeding the capabilities of all competitive products, while retaining all the inherent ARCNET characteristics of data integrity, reliability, and deterministic performance. The COM20051 offers higher integration. This device not only includes the ARCNET protocol engine and RAM buffer, but also an Intel-compatible microcontroller based on the 80C32 ROMless version of the 8051. The COM20051 allows a fully-integrated solution, combining the control functionality with the networking functionality in a single package. The COM20051+ offers all the benefits of the COM20051 with an added A/D interface and watchdog timer. For ease to design-in and use the COM200xx products, SMSC offers real-time networking software called ControlLink(. This software product provides a hardware-transparent interface for host systems and relieves the programmer of the necessarity of programming the details of the network interface. Two versions of ControlLink( are available: ControlLink86( for use with 80 x 86 host processor designs and ControlLink51( for use with 8051 host processors, including the COM20051 and COM20051+. SMSC also manufactures evaluation boards for its ARCNET products, which offer the designer a convenient platform for developing COM200xx applications. They are designed to permit the user to integrate his application-specific circuitry with the COM200xx product and get a prototype running in the shortest time possible. Additionally, SMSC's ARCNET products are supported by SMSC's worldwide network of Field Application Engineers, who are educated in the latest product information to answer customer questions and resolve technical issues.
