ARCNET is designated as a high-speed local area network (LAN) well-suited for real-time control applications in both the industrial and commercial marketplaces. ARCNET is able to successfully transmit and receive a data packet between two network nodes. A node refers to an ARCNET controller chip and cable transceiver connected to the network.

The ARCNET Trade Association (ATA) functions as a non-profit organization of ARCNET users and manufacturers formed to promote ARCNET and to provide information and standards for users. ATA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop American National Standards.
